# Negotiate a job offer with AI

## When to use

Anyone holding an offer who wants to ask for more without sounding pushy or making it up.

## Steps

1. List each offer: base pay, bonus, benefits, time off, remote policy, start date.
2. Look up the role. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook lists median pay by occupation; local job posts with salary ranges help too.
3. Run the prompt below for the comparison table and a counter draft.
4. Check the counter: one or two real reasons, one number, polite tone.
5. Rehearse: ask the AI to play the recruiter and push back three times.
6. Get the final offer in writing before accepting.

## Prompt

Fill the [BRACKETED] parts with the user, then follow this prompt:

```
Help me negotiate a job offer. Use only what I give you.
Offer(s): [PAY, BONUS, BENEFITS, TIME OFF, REMOTE, START]
Public pay data I found, with sources: [PASTE]
What matters most to me: [e.g. base pay, remote days]
My number: [AMOUNT]
1. A comparison table of the offers
2. A counter email under 120 words with 1 or 2 reasons from my facts
3. Then play the recruiter: push back 3 times and wait for my reply each time
Do not invent pay data or competing offers.
```

## Guardrails

- Draft first and show the user. Never send, post, pay, book, cancel or delete without the user's explicit approval of that exact action.
- Use only facts the user gives you or that you can cite. If something is missing, ask instead of guessing.

## Common snags

- Using national median pay for a high-cost city without saying so.
- Too many reasons; one or two strong ones are enough.
- Accepting verbally before the revised offer is in writing.
