Track Flight and Hotel Price Drops with ChatGPT

Quick answer

Here's how I'd set this up in ChatGPT (not run by us yet). After booking, I'd create a daily scheduled task that looks up the current public price for my flight or hotel and tells me if it's lower than what I paid. If it is, I'd check the fare rules and rebook myself.

What does this setup do?

You give ChatGPT your booked flight or hotel and the price you paid, it creates a daily scheduled task that checks the current public price and notifies you if it drops, and you decide whether rebooking is worth it.

Who is it for?

For anyone who booked a trip early and wonders whether the price dropped afterward, especially on hotel rooms with free cancellation or flexible fares.

How do you set it up?

Tools

  • ChatGPT Free or a paid plan. Scheduled tasks are on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. Free gets 3 active tasks that run at most once a day.
  • Your booking details: route and dates, or hotel and dates, plus the price you paid
  • Your fare or room's change and cancellation rules

Steps

  1. Book the trip, then write down exactly what you booked and the total you paid.
  2. Check your fare or room rules. A lower price only helps if you can change or cancel without a fee that eats the savings.
  3. Paste the prompt below. Ask ChatGPT to set it up as a daily scheduled task. On Free, tasks run at most once a day in a flexible window like morning or night.
  4. Turn on notifications in Settings so you see the result.
  5. When it reports a lower price, open the airline, hotel, or booking site yourself to confirm the price for the same dates and room or fare type.
  6. If it's still lower and your rules allow it, rebook or cancel and rebook yourself. Then pause or delete the task in Scheduled.

Example output

Illustrative. Your results will differ.

  • Daily task set: hotel in Denver, 3 nights, paid total entered
  • Day 4: lower public rate found for the same room type, link included
  • You checked the hotel's site and rebooked. Task paused.

Copy-paste prompt

Adapt bracketed fields to your situation.

Set up a daily scheduled task to watch the price of a trip I already booked. Don't book, change, or cancel anything.

What I booked: [airline, flight numbers, dates, fare type] or [hotel, room type, dates]
Price I paid (total): [amount]
Stop checking on: [date]

Each day:
1. Search the web for the current public price for the same flight and fare type, or the same hotel, room type, and dates.
2. Tell me the lowest price you found, where you found it, and a link.
3. Only flag it as a drop if it's lower than what I paid for the same thing. If you couldn't find a comparable price, say "no comparable price found" rather than guessing.

Rules: Don't invent prices. Note when a price excludes taxes or fees.

What usually goes wrong?

Where agents tend to stall on this job. More patterns in Where AI gets stuck.

  • Live fares and room rates often sit behind booking sites that web search can't fully see, so the task may report no comparable price. When it does, check the price yourself.
  • On Free, the task runs at most once a day, so short price dips can come and go between checks.
  • Prices the task finds may leave out taxes, fees, or bag costs. Compare the full total before you rebook.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT track flight prices?
It can run a daily scheduled task that searches for the current public price and tells you if it's lower than what you paid. It may not see every live fare, so confirm on the airline's site before you act.
Does ChatGPT have price alerts?
There's no separate price alert tool, but a scheduled task can check prices and notify you. On ChatGPT Free you get 3 active tasks that run at most once a day.
Can I rebook a hotel if the price drops?
Often, if your rate has free cancellation. Check the cancellation deadline and the full new price with taxes and fees before you cancel and rebook.
Can you cancel a flight within 24 hours?
For flights covered by US DOT rules and booked at least a week before departure, the airline must let you hold the fare without paying, or cancel without penalty, for at least 24 hours after booking.

Where should you go next on this site?

What tips make it smoother?

  • For US flights booked at least a week before departure, DOT rules require covered airlines to let you hold the fare without paying, or cancel without penalty, for at least 24 hours after booking.
  • Set a stop date in the prompt so the task doesn't keep running after your trip.
  • If your hotel rate has free cancellation, rebooking at a lower price can be simple. Read the cancellation deadline first.
