Autonomous business

How to Build an Autonomous Business With AI Agents (Real Setup)

Guide

The problem

You've seen the posts. Someone says an AI agent built them a business in a week and it's already making money. Maybe it did. I can't check their numbers, so I'm not repeating them here.

What I can show you is mine. I wanted a small side business that bots run day to day, without me waking up to a charge I didn't approve or a post I never saw. So I built aisetupsthatwork.com with a few AI agents and one rule. They do the work, and I approve anything that ships or costs money.

The setup (which bot does what)

Three bots, each with one job.

GM bot. Sets priorities. Every weekday morning it reads the site analytics, Search Console and social numbers, then writes one brief for each of the other two bots. Around 9 AM ET it sends me one approval batch in chat with full previews: pages, posts, and any code changes waiting to merge. I approve items one at a time or all at once. On Fridays it reviews what's working and cuts what isn't.

Site & search bot. Writes the setup pages, keeps the site readable for search engines and AI answer engines (FAQ schema, llms.txt, robots.txt that lets AI crawlers in), and drafts the weekly newsletter.

Social bot. Turns each new page into posts for the site's own social accounts and is set up to publish through Buffer once I've approved them.

The plumbing:

  • Hosting: Vercel, auto-deploying from the main branch on GitHub.
  • Code changes: Cursor cloud agents open a pull request on a branch. Nothing merges to production until I say OK.
  • Email: Kit for the newsletter and signup form. Resend for sending from the site's own domain.
  • Handoffs: one shared Google Sheet tab. Every brief and every result is a row: date, from, to, type, brief, link, status, result, metric. Bots never ask me what to do next; the GM decides and logs it there.
  • Approval gate: posts, merges, spending, sign-ups, new accounts, sponsors, legal and tax all wait for my OK in chat. Everything else, the bots do first and log.
  • Budget: $0 spending until something proves it works or a sponsor pays.

Copy this prompt to create your GM bot

Swap the bracketed parts for your own business.

Your only job: be the GM of [business name] ([site URL]). Your number is [revenue or MRR]. You don't write pages, posts or code yourself. You brief the other bots and judge their results.

Every weekday morning:
1. Read [analytics tool], [search tool] and [social scheduler] numbers.
2. Write one brief for each bot ([site bot], [social bot]) as a new row in the [shared sheet tab] with columns: Date, From, To, Type, Brief, Link, Status, Result, Metric. Aim each brief at whatever moves traffic, subscribers or revenue most today.
3. Around [time], send me ONE approval batch in chat with a full preview of each item (page text, post with its image or video, any pull request to merge). 5 to 8 items, each approvable on its own or all at once. Record each decision in the sheet.

Every Friday: list each channel and offer with its real numbers. Kill what isn't moving, double what is, and send me a short scoreboard.

Rules:
- Ask me before: publishing, merging code, spending money, signing up for anything, creating accounts, sponsor deals, legal or tax. Do everything else first and log it.
- Spend $0 until something is proven.
- Never invent numbers, quotes or results. If you don't have a number, say "not measured yet."
- Don't ask me what to do next. Decide, log it, and put it in tomorrow's batch.

Honest numbers (as of Oct 20, 2026)

  • Revenue: $0. It hasn't made a dollar yet.
  • Site: launched Oct 13, 2026. 200+ setup pages live now.
  • Traffic (Vercel Web Analytics, Oct 14 to 20): 320 page views. 311 came with no referrer (direct), 6 from google.com.
  • Search (Google Search Console, last 28 days): 64 impressions, 0 clicks.
  • Newsletter (Kit): 0 subscribers.

Time saved: not measured yet.

One honest limitation

It still needs me. Every page, post and code change waits for my approval, so a day I don't check chat is a day nothing ships. And the bots don't catch everything. On launch day the mobile header had to be fixed before the site looked right on a phone. A person checking the site on a real phone is still part of the process.

Common questions

Can an AI agent run a business by itself?
It can do most of the daily work, like drafting pages, writing posts, reading analytics and deciding what to do next. I still approve anything that goes public or costs money.
How do I set up a bot-run side business?
Give each bot one job, connect them through one shared sheet, and have a GM bot send you a single approval batch a day. The prompt above is the GM bot I use.
How much does it cost to run a business with AI agents?
Our rule is $0 extra spending until something proves itself, so we use free tiers. You still need a domain and whatever your AI tool subscription costs.
How much money can an autonomous AI business make?
Ours has made $0 as of Oct 20, 2026. Be careful with screenshots of fast results; you can't check them, and they aren't a forecast for you.
What should a human still approve?
Publishing, merging code, spending, new accounts, sponsor deals, and anything legal or tax-related.
How many AI agents do I need?
We run three: a GM, a site and search bot, and a social bot. Start with one recurring job and add a bot when that job runs smoothly.
