Quick answer
Have AI rewrite your notes as question-answer pairs in a tab-separated format, then import the file through Anki's File menu. Keep cards atomic: one fact per card, and use cloze deletion for fill-in-the-blank style cards.

What does this setup do?
Convert class notes or textbook chapters into import-ready Anki flashcards, including cloze deletions.
Who is it for?
Students and self-learners who take notes but never turn them into something they can drill.
How do you set it up?
Tools
- Anki (free, desktop or mobile)
- ChatGPT or Claude (free tier is fine)
- Your class notes or textbook chapter as text
- A plain text editor for the import file
Steps
- Paste a section of notes into the chat and ask for question-answer pairs, one fact per card, in tab-separated format.
- For definitions and sequences, ask for cloze deletions instead: the AI wraps hidden text like {{c1::mitochondria}}.
- Save the output as a plain .txt file in UTF-8. Anki imports comma, semicolon, or tab-separated files; it guesses the separator and you can override it.
- In Anki, go to File, then Import. Pick the deck, check the field mapping, and import. Duplicates are judged by the first field, so make the first field unique.
- For cloze cards, make sure the note type is set to Cloze. Cloze tags only work with the Cloze note type, not regular ones.
- Review the new cards once and fix any bad splits before you start studying. Garbage cards waste every future review.
Example output
Illustrative. Your results will differ.
- 45-minute meeting condensed to 8 action items
- Each item has an owner and a due date
- Skim the list. Fix anything wrong before sharing.

Adapt bracketed fields to your situation.
Turn my study notes into Anki flashcards. Plain and practical.
Notes:
[paste your notes here, one section at a time]
Write the flashcards as tab-separated lines: question[TAB]answer.
Rules:
- One fact per card. Split anything with two facts into two cards.
- Short questions, short answers. No paragraphs on cards.
- For definitions, also give me a cloze version using {{c1::hidden text}} syntax.
- Skip anything that is opinion or filler.
- Show me the cards first. I will review before importing.Newsletter

What usually goes wrong?
Where agents tend to stall on this job. More patterns in Where AI gets stuck.
- Pasting a whole textbook chapter. The AI compresses instead of atomizing. Go section by section.
- Cloze syntax in a Basic note type. It silently will not work: switch the note type to Cloze.
- Encoding issues on import. Save as UTF-8 plain text; Anki recommends LibreOffice over Excel for clean CSV export.
- Two facts on one card. You will mark it "hard" forever. Split it.

Common questions
- What format does Anki import?
- Any plain text file with fields separated by commas, semicolons, or tabs, saved as UTF-8. Import through the File menu, then check the field mapping in the preview.
- What is a cloze deletion?
- A fill-in-the-blank card. You wrap the hidden text like {{c1::mitochondria}} and Anki generates a card that hides it. Each number (c1, c2) makes its own card. It only works with the Cloze note type.
- How do I avoid duplicate cards?
- Anki judges duplicates by the first field. Make your first field the unique question, and the import dialog will flag matches so you can update or skip them.
What tips make it smoother?
- One section at a time. Whole chapters in one prompt give mushy cards.
- Make the first field unique (the question). Anki uses it to detect duplicates on import.
- Cloze deletions are best for lists, definitions, and sequences. Q&A is best for concepts.
- Delete bad cards during your first review. A confusing card costs you every time it appears.
