Quick answer
Here's how I'd set this up in ChatGPT or Claude (not run by us yet). When something breaks, I'd upload the warranty, my receipt, and photos of the problem, and have the chat check whether the issue looks covered and how the claim process works. Then I'd send the claim myself and keep copies.

What does this setup do?
You upload the warranty, your receipt, and photos of the defect, ChatGPT or Claude reads the coverage terms, tells you what looks covered and what the warranty requires, and drafts a short claim message. You send it to the seller or manufacturer yourself.
Who is it for?
For anyone whose appliance, gadget, or furniture broke while it might still be under warranty, and who doesn't want to dig through the fine print to find out.
How do you set it up?
Tools
- ChatGPT Free or Claude Free. Both read PDF and photo uploads, and ChatGPT Free limits uploads.
- The written warranty (often in the manual or on the maker's website) and your receipt
- Clear photos or a short description of the defect
Steps
- Find the written warranty. If you lost it, search the manufacturer's website for the product's warranty page.
- Upload the warranty, the receipt, and photos of the problem with the prompt below. Black out card numbers on the receipt.
- Read what the chat finds: how long coverage lasts, what's covered, what's excluded, and what you have to do to make a claim.
- Check any exclusion it flags against the warranty text yourself. If a part or repair isn't listed as covered, the FTC says to assume it isn't.
- Start with the seller. If the seller won't fix it, send the claim to the manufacturer at the address on the warranty. Certified mail with a return receipt gives you proof it arrived.
- Keep copies of everything you send and note the date of every call.
Example output
Illustrative. Your results will differ.
- Coverage period checked: purchase date is inside the 1-year warranty
- Covering clause and 1 possible exclusion quoted
- Claim message drafted for the seller. Nothing sent.

Help me file a warranty claim. Don't contact anyone for me.
Product: [brand, model]
Bought on: [date] from [store]
What's wrong: [describe the problem and when it started]
Attached: the warranty, my receipt (card number blacked out), and photos of the problem.
1. Tell me how long the warranty lasts and whether my purchase date is inside it.
2. Quote the parts of the warranty that cover this problem, and any exclusions that might apply.
3. List what the warranty says I have to do: who to contact, proof needed, shipping or labor costs, registration.
4. Draft a short, factual claim message with the product, purchase date, problem, and what I'm asking for (repair, replacement, or refund, per the warranty).
Rules: Only use what the warranty actually says. If it doesn't cover something, say so plainly. Don't invent terms or deadlines.Newsletter

What usually goes wrong?
Where agents tend to stall on this job. More patterns in Where AI gets stuck.
- Warranties exclude a lot, like misuse or wear and tear, and the chat can't force a company to honor a claim.
- The chat can misread fine print or miss a registration requirement. Check the sections it quotes against the warranty yourself.
- An extended warranty or service contract is a separate contract with its own terms. Upload that contract too if you have one.

Common questions
- Can ChatGPT help me file a warranty claim?
- Yes. Upload the warranty, your receipt, and photos of the problem, and it can check what looks covered and draft the claim. You send it yourself.
- What if I lost my warranty?
- Check the manufacturer's website for the product's warranty page. Even without a written warranty, state laws create implied warranties for almost everything you buy, unless it was sold "as is" where allowed.
- Who do I contact for a warranty claim, the store or the manufacturer?
- The FTC says to contact the seller first. If the seller doesn't fix it, write to the manufacturer at the address on the warranty, ideally by certified mail with a return receipt.
- What does a warranty not cover?
- It depends on the warranty, but common exclusions are misuse, changes you made, and normal wear. If a part or repair isn't listed as covered, the FTC says to assume it isn't.

What tips make it smoother?
- Even without a written warranty, state laws create implied warranties that cover almost everything you buy, unless it was sold "as is" where allowed, per the FTC.
- If you report a defect during the warranty period and it isn't fixed properly, the FTC says the company must still correct it, even if the warranty expires before the fix.
- Save the warranty and receipt together as soon as you buy something big. It makes the next claim easy.
