Quick answer
Self-publishing runs through editing, design, proofing, then upload and marketing. AI can help with brainstorming, editing passes, and checklists, but hire a human editor and disclose AI-generated content where the platform requires it.

What does this setup do?
Walk the self-publishing steps in order, using AI for brainstorming, editing help, and checklists, with professionals handling editing and cover design.
Who is it for?
Aspiring authors with a finished or nearly finished manuscript. AI assists with parts of the process; it does not replace an editor or designer.
How do you set it up?
Tools
- ChatGPT or Claude (free tier is fine)
- A finished manuscript (or a solid draft)
- A professional editor and cover designer (budget for both)
- Distribution accounts: Amazon KDP, Kobo, or IngramSpark
Steps
- Finish the manuscript first. AI can help brainstorm and organize, but the draft is yours to write.
- Get a professional edit. At minimum, hire an outside editor; a copyedit for an 80,000-word manuscript takes about two weeks, and good editors book a month or more ahead.
- Design the cover with a professional designer. The cover is often the number-one marketing tool for the book.
- Proof the formatted files, then convert to your formats. EPUB gives the best ebook quality.
- Get ISBNs for each format you publish.
- Upload to your distribution platforms and check their file specs. On Amazon, books are often live within 24 hours, and preorders can run up to 90 days.
- Disclose AI-generated content where required. Amazon KDP requires disclosure when AI created the actual content; AI-assisted brainstorming and editing needs no disclosure.
- Plan marketing separately: the publishing checklist ends at upload.
Example output
Illustrative. Your results will differ.
- Your input turned into a clear, prioritized plan
- Next 3 actions with dates, in priority order
- You stay in charge. The agent just organizes.

Help me plan my self-publishing project. I will hire an editor and designer; you are the checklist and brainstorming helper.
Book: [title, genre, rough word count]
Formats planned: [ebook, paperback, hardcover, audiobook]
Where I am now: [finished draft, editing, formatting, ready to upload]
AI use so far: [brainstorming only, editing help, none: be honest]
Rules:
- Lay out the remaining steps in order: editing, design, proofing, ISBN, file conversion, upload, marketing.
- For each step, say whether AI can help, a professional is needed, or both.
- Remind me of the KDP rule: disclose AI-generated content (AI created the actual text, images, or translations); no disclosure needed for AI-assisted brainstorming or editing.
- Flag anything I should verify on the platform’s current guidelines page before publishing.
- Do NOT write my book for me or invent publishing facts.

What usually goes wrong?
Where agents tend to stall on this job. More patterns in Where AI gets stuck.
- AI cannot replace editing or cover design. Skipping professionals shows in reviews and sales.
- Amazon requires disclosure of AI-generated content, and the definition covers text, images, and translations even if you edited them afterward. Check the current KDP guidelines before publishing.
- Inaccurate metadata like keyword stuffing or false award claims is a policy violation that platforms enforce.
- Marketing is a separate project. The publishing checklist ends at upload; readers do not find the book by themselves.

Common questions
- Where can AI actually help in self-publishing?
- Brainstorming, organizing, editing passes, checklists, and marketing copy drafts. Per Amazon’s rules, AI-assisted work like editing and refining needs no disclosure; only content actually created by AI must be disclosed.
- Do I have to tell Amazon I used AI?
- Amazon KDP requires disclosure when AI generated the actual text, images, or translations, even if you edited them afterward. If you wrote the content yourself and used AI to edit or brainstorm, no disclosure is required. Verify the current guidelines before publishing.
- Can I skip the professional editor to save money?
- Every major guide advises against it. At minimum, hire an outside editor; readers and reviewers notice unedited books, and it hurts the book permanently.
What tips make it smoother?
- Hire, at minimum, an outside editor. It is the most repeated advice in self-publishing guides.
- Book your copyeditor a month or more in advance. Good ones are scheduled out.
- Check each platform’s file specs before uploading. Interior and cover requirements differ.
- Keep your manuscript, cover files, and ISBN records organized from the start. You will need them at every step.
