Quick answer
Turn on ChatGPT’s Study Mode and it guides instead of answering: it asks what your kid already knows, works through problems step by step, and quizzes them after. You set it up once with the subject and level.

What does this setup do?
Use ChatGPT Study Mode so your kid gets guided practice, step-by-step explanations, and quizzes instead of copied answers.
Who is it for?
Parents whose kids reach for ChatGPT to finish homework and want it to teach instead.
How do you set it up?
Tools
- A ChatGPT account (Study Mode works across plans, per OpenAI)
- The subject and topic your kid is working on
- Course materials or a photo of the problem (optional)
Steps
- Open a new chat and turn on Study Mode: type @study in the web composer, or find Study in the + menu on iOS or Android.
- Write the first message with the details OpenAI recommends: the learner’s level, the exact topic, the goal, what they already understand, and any deadline.
- Tell it the rule up front: guide me step by step, ask me questions, do not give the final answer until I try.
- Let your kid work through the problem answering its questions. Study Mode uses a Socratic approach: it asks what they know, where they got stuck, and what step they would try next.
- After the concept lands, ask it to quiz: one question at a time, with feedback on each answer.
- Upload the class notes, slides, or a photo of the worksheet so the practice matches what the teacher assigned.
- Double-check anything that counts. OpenAI says Study Mode can make mistakes, so verify important facts, especially before homework or exams go in.
Example output
Illustrative. Your results will differ.
- Your input turned into a clear, prioritized plan
- Next 3 actions with dates, in priority order
- You stay in charge. The agent just organizes.

Copy-paste prompt
Adapt bracketed fields to your situation.
Act as a tutor for my child. Do not give final answers until they try first.
Student level: [e.g. "7th grade"]
Subject and topic: [e.g. "fractions: adding fractions with different denominators"]
Goal: [e.g. "finish tonight’s worksheet and actually understand it"]
What they already know: [e.g. "can add fractions with the same denominator"]
Rules:
- Ask one guiding question at a time. Wait for an answer before moving on.
- If they get stuck, give a hint, not the answer.
- When they solve one, quiz them with a similar problem before moving to the next.
- At the end, summarize what they learned in two sentences.
Review the session with your child afterward. Check anything that will be graded against the class materials.Newsletter

What usually goes wrong?
Where agents tend to stall on this job. More patterns in Where AI gets stuck.
- The AI sometimes gives a direct answer anyway. Say "give me a hint instead" and it will step back into tutor mode.
- It can make mistakes, especially in math. OpenAI says to double-check important information, so verify before anything graded.
- It is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs, or Projects. Start a regular chat or the mode will not engage.

Common questions
- Does Study Mode cost extra?
- No. OpenAI says it is available across ChatGPT plans globally on web, iOS, and Android, and it uses the same message and rate limits as regular ChatGPT.
- Can my kid just ask it for the answer?
- Yes, and that is the weak point: the student can switch Study Mode off, with no guardrails against it per OpenAI. It works best with younger kids when a parent is nearby, and with older kids who actually want to learn.
- Is this cheating?
- It depends on the school’s policy. OpenAI says graded work must follow the school’s AI-use rules, and Study Mode does not replace a teacher. Ask the teacher what is allowed before it touches graded work.
What tips make it smoother?
- The first message matters most. Level, topic, goal, and what they already know get you a tutor; a bare question gets you an answer key.
- Kids can switch Study Mode off, and OpenAI notes there are no guardrails against that. For younger kids, stay nearby for the first sessions.
- Use it for review before tests, not just homework. Ask it to build practice questions from the class notes.
- It does not replace a teacher, and graded work has to follow the school’s AI policy. When in doubt, ask the teacher what is allowed.
